Training Path

Houston is training for service work using both a combination of classes and individual training.
Classes that cater to a range of obedience levels can result in slower-paced classes and a strain on valuable class time for the more advanced students. To ensure all our students achieve the best possible results, and train at the best possible rate, it is important to be sure your dog is at the appropriate level of training. To better serve our service dog students, The Service Dog Academy requires the completion of the curriculum below or have paid a $135 evaluation fee in order to proceed in the more advanced CGC / Service Dog Training class and/or appointments.
Here’s How to Begin!
No Dog Yet
If you do not already have a dog, get started by enrolling in Service Dog Training – Before You Get Your Dog
Your dog will be more than a dedicated companion, he will be attached to you 24/7! Getting a service dog is an important decision that should be considered carefully, and this class will provide you with the tools you need to make the big step.
Already Have A Dog
Already have a dog? Just follow these steps for success!
Step One: Basic Adult Dog / Basic Puppy – 4 weeks – $135
Teach your dog the tools to succeed in basic obedience! By the end of class your dog will be able to understand the following commands: sit, stay, down, come, leave-it, as well as impulse control loose leash walking, and proper handling techniques!
You are now eligible to proceed to Diabetic Alert Training 101 and 201 – 2 classes, 8 weeks each – $700 per class.
Step Two: After You Get Your Service Dog – 1.5 hours – $40
This course explores the multiple issues that occur after you get your dog. A detailed course regarding the service dog lifestyle such as rights and responsibilities, how to keep you and your dog safe, talking openly with strangers about your disability, and dealing with your dog’s actions in public.
Step Three: Canine Good Citizen 4 weeks – $135
Advanced obedience teaches the dog how to be a good citizen in public. These are the tools needed to pass the AKC Good Citizen test. A service dog is expected to be a reliable, well-behaved member of their families and communities and an AKC Good Citizen certification is the best way to achieve results.
Step Four: Service Dog Access – 4 weeks – $135
The first level of official service dog classes! You will learn to train your dog to be more focused on you, expand your dogs basic obedience commands to fit real world situations and ensure reliability of obedience commands, and this class will help you pass the Assistance Dogs International Public Access Test a crucial designation for all service dogs.
Step Five: Service Dog Task Training – 4 weeks – $135
This is the second level of service dog classes, where you learn to tailor your dogs defining tasks! Your dog will receive individualized task training in a classroom and in a public access environment.
After the above classes are completed we can proceed with private training and determine hourly rates going forward.
